If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all the mysteries and have all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I give up my body that I may be burned but do not have love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1–3)

How do people know that we are Christians? What sets us apart as God’s holy people? How do we show our faith to the world? Paul reminds us that it is our love that shows the world our faith.

During the early years of the Christian church, God gave the people special gifts to help advance the spread the gospel. At Pentecost, he allowed the disciples to speak in languages that they did not know. This gift continued into the congregations that Paul was blessed to serve. People were given the ability to speak in languages that were previously unknown to them. Others were privileged to translate these languages. Some even had the ability to prophecy and the knowledge to interpret the Scriptures. But Paul says that all these gifts meaning nothing if they aren’t being used to show love to others.

God has given each of us gifts that make us unique as well. It is easy to see these gifts as a part of who we are, and to use these gifts to serve ourselves. But, just as Paul reminded the Corinthians, God gives us our gifts so that we can use them to show his love to others, and by doing so, perhaps be a witness to them of God’s great love.

If we are only focused on ourselves, we do not gain anything, nor do we amount to anything. But with love, we point others to the one who first loved us, and has given us the greatest reward of all time: heaven. Our love points tot he one who has shown us ultimate love by taking our sins upon himslef, and suffering our punishment. He is the reason that we do all things with love. Amen.
