“Did we not give you strict orders not to teach in this name? Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring this man’s blood down on us!” But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:28–29)

After Pentecost, the disciples began to spread the good news of Jesus’ resurrection, starting in Jerusalem (just as Jesus had told them to.) But the high priest and his group of followers, the Sadducees, were filled with envy. They didn’t want the people to follow Peter and the apostles or hear their teaching. They were afraid that if the people believed Peter and the other apostles, the people would realize that the high priest had put an innocent man to death by an unfair trial, and the high priest would lose his power over the people. To stop this from happening, the high priest and the Sadducees had the apostles arrested.

But God was not about to let his eyewitnesses be silent. He sent an angel to release the apostles and give them direction on where to proclaim the good news next. When the high priest and the Sanhedrin tried again to stop the apostles from witnessing, Peter gave this answer that the high priest could not deny.

When you try to witness to someone about your faith, there is always something that will try to stop you. Maybe it’s another person. Maybe it’s that voice inside your head telling you to stop. Maybe it’s the fear of making a fool of yourself or being rejected. All of these things can seem to make some pretty strong arguments as to why we shouldn’t share our faith. But Jesus sends us into the world as his witnesses. And he promises to be with us and that his word will not return to him empty. Therefore, we can tell whatever or whoever it is that tries to stop us from witnessing that we must obey God rather than men, and know that God will not abandon us for doing so. Amen.
