Sympathy From God

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet was without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

As humans, we crave sympathy. We don’t want to be alone in our struggles. We want others to know what we are going through and to assure us that it will all work out. When we someone else struggling, we want to let them know that we sympathize or empathize wtih them. We want to let them know that we are thinking of them, and that we know what they are going through.

When God looked at the plight of human beings, he saw our sin and our temptations. He saw how powerless we were to overcome the temptations that Satan puts before us. God saw how helpless we were and he loved us, even though we rebelled against him. So he promised to send a savior.

Jesus came into this world, taking on human flesh, and humbling himself. He obeyed God’s law perfectly for us. And Satan tempted him, the same as he does every human being. But unlike us, Jesus was able to resist every single temptation that Satan put before him. And he gave that perfection to us through his death on the cross.

Therefore, the writer to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus does not just sit above us and rule over us. He has seen your struggles. He knows what it is like to be tempted. He understands your struggles, and he sympathizes with you. But he also has forgiven you when you fail to resist temptation. He has forgiven your every sin so that you might be perfect in his eyes. Amen.
