An Advocate For Sin

My children, I write these things to you so that you will not sin. If anyone does sin, we have an Advocate before the Father: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:1–2)

Sin, it’s one of those things that no one likes to talk about or think about. We would just prefer to go about doing whatever it is that we are doing, without having someone call us out on it. And we really don’t like apologizing for our sins. And yet, so many people like to live their lives in sin. In fact, everyone, at one point in time, was a slave to sin. They only did what sin wanted them to do.

But Christians have been freed from the slavery of sin. We are no longer bound to sin. And so John wrote a letter to encourage us not to sin. But just because we have been freed from sin, does not mean that we will never sin. We are still sinners with a sinful nature that needs to be drowned daily. So while John wants to encourage us not to sin, he knows that we will still fall into sin. therefore he also writes to remind us that we have an advocate. We have someone who intercedes on our behalf. That someone is Jesus. He intercedes for us because he has made atonement for our sins.

But this atonement is not only for Christian’s sins. It is for the sins of the whole world. Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of the whole world. There is not a single person, whom Jesus didn’t die for. Because of that, we want to share the good news with others. We want to tell them that their sins have been forgiven. Amen.
