Blessed is the Righteous Man
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, who does not stand on the path with sinners, and who does not sit in a meeting with mockers. But his delight is in the teaching of the Lord, and on his teaching he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, and its leaves do not wither. Everything he does prospers. (Psalm 1:1–3)
Psalm 1 is often paired with Psalm 2 to act as an introduction to the book of Psalms. The two psalms together capture the entirety of the central message of the psalms. Psalm 1 starts with a blessing on those who love God’s Word and Psalm 2 ends with a blessing on those who love God’s Messiah.
In the beginning verses of Psalm 1, we see that the righteous love God’s Word and they hate sin. They make God’s Word their guide and they bear fruits of faith. This is what God wants of us. He wants us to be rooted in his Word and to bear fruits of faith. We let God’s Word be our guide, and we dwell on the forgiveness that he offers to us in his Word. This is the way of the righteous. And by meditating on God’s Word, reading it, and hearing it, our faith is nourished like a tree by running water is. Amen.
