Connected to the Vine

“I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him is the one who bears much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

If you’ve ever done anything with plants, you know how crucial it is that certain parts of the plants remain connected in order for the plant to be fruitful and successful.

Well, Jesus said we are like plants, like grape plants to be specific. If we want to be fruitful and successful, we need to be connected to him, the Vine. He is the one who supplies us with nutrients to be fruitful. He provides for our spiritual needs and shows us his love. Only when we are connected to that love can we bear fruits of love.

We remain connected to Jesus through his Word. In his word, we are shown our sins, the rotten fruit that we bear. We are shown our lack of love for one another. But we are also told that we have forgiveness for our sins. We hear of Christ’s love for us. It is that love that flows through us and bears fruit in us. It causes us to show love to others and to do the things that are pleasing in God’s sight. Because we are connected to the Vine, we bear fruits of love. Amen.
