In that day you will say: I will give thanks to you, Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away, and you comfort me. Surely God is my salvation. I will trust him and will not be afraid, because Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation. (Isaiah 12:1–2)
Isaiah begins this section with the prophecy of a shoot that will come from the stump of Jesse. We typically read this prophecy around Christmas time. But as we read through the prophecy that Isaiah made about the shoot of Jesse, we quickly find out that this is one of those prophecies that is really talking about multiple points in history. Isaiah begins by talking about the time of Jesus birth and what he would accomplish during his time here on earth, but also sets up pictures of the Last Day, when creation will live in harmony together.
That’s why Isaiah begins these verses with “in that day.” During that time between Jesus first coming and his second coming, these will be the words of God’s people.
We were once enemies of God. Through our sin, we made God angry and deserved only his wrath and condemnation. We did nothing that pleased God, nor could we. Our very being made God angry becasue of our sin, which had been handed down to us from our parents.
And for that reason, God sent Jesus down to this earth to be the shoot from the stump of Jesse. As the shoot from the stump of Jesse, he lived the perfect life that we could not. He was crucified on the cross to pay the sentence that our sins deserved. By doing so, he brought us salvation. He revealed to us God’s grace by which our condemnation is crushed and God’s anger is turned away from us.
Because God’s grace in Jesus has turned away God’s anger, we can trust in God and not be afraid. We can trust in him to give us hope and to comfort us in our times of need. We can thank him for his great love to us. we can sing songs of praise to him. Amen.
The song for today is “The Lord Is My Salvation” by Keith and Kristyn Getty
