My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:27–28)

There is a lot in our world that wants our attention. It seems like we never have time to just sit and relax. There is always something to do or something to watch or listen to. And much of what we hear on the radio, on TV, and in our day-to-day interactions is meant to bring fear into our lives. And if that is all we are listening to, then it will certainly lead us to fear.

But Jesus tells us that he is our good shepherd. The good shepherd knows his sheep. He knows their fears and their concerns. He knows their struggles and their temptations. And he tells us that his sheep know him. They listen to his voice and they follow where he leads them.

Jesus’ sheep listen to his voice. They listen to his Word, recorded for us in the pages of Scripture. They trust his promises and take comfort in them. They see that Jesus is the fulfillment of all the prophesies that God gave to his Old Testament people. Most importantly, he is the fulfillment of the first promise made to Adam and Eve after the fall into sin, which God built upon throughout the generations of his Old testament people. He is the seed (or offspring) that came to crush the serpents head and restore the relationship between God and men. He did exactly that when he gave up his life on the cross, and took it back up again in the empty tomb.

Because of that faith in Jesus, his sheep have eternal life. He leads them to the greenest pastures of heaven. They are his forever. Nothing can take them away from him. Not fear, not war, not any disease or virus, not even the devil himself. Jesus holds us in his hand until the day that we enter our eternal dwelling place.

You are Jesus’ sheep becasue you listen to his voice. Continue to listen to his voice and trust in his promises. Amen.

The song for today is “The Lord's My Shepherd (Psalm 23)” by Stuart Townend
