Our Great King Reigns

God reigns as king over the nations. God is seated on his holy throne. (Psalm 47:8)

When Pilate asked Jesus if he was a king, Jesus answered that he was a king but his kingdom is not of this world. In the Apostles Creed, we confess that Jesus “ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.” Psalm 47 explains this for us.

As true God, Jesus is king over all the earth. He was the one who created it and governed it from the time of Adam to his birth, and from his birth until now. He showed his power over creation on many occasions, calming storms and withering trees, healing diseases, and raising the dead. All of this, he did to teach his disciples and to spread his Word to the people.

When Jesus ascended into heaven, he went there to take his throne as king so that he might govern all things for our good. He is the king whom we praise. He is our most awesome king. We praise him because he has forgiven our sins and made us his children. There is no higher authority than that of Jesus, the one who loves us and gave himself up for us. He is the God who reigns over all the nations, to control them for the benefit of his church. Amen.
