Our Greater Shepherd
You are from God, dear children, and you have overcome the false prophets, because the one in you is greater than the one in the world. (1 John 4:4)
Have you ever met someone who was teaching something so wrong about God’s Word that it made you shake your head or even smack your forehead in disgust? You just cannot believe that someone would twist God’s Word so terribly and lead so many people away from God and his grace.
As John wrote his first letter, he faced that very same situation. People whom he had taught were twisting the Word of God and leading his precious flock away from their Good Shepherd. But John was not without hope. The people that he had taught and brought into the flock were not hopeless. They were God’s children. They had come from God and they knew God. Because of that, they did not have to listen to these false prophets. They had conquered over them because the Holy Spirit was in them. They had the spirit of truth. They knew what God’s Word says. They did not have to put up with the lies of Satan that these men were proclaiming.
When Satan comes against us, trying to attack us through those who so blatantly twist the Word of God, we too need not worry. We have overcome them because Jesus has overcome Satan. Satan has no power over us. He is defeated. The war has been won for us. We need only to hold to God’s Word, and cling to his promises. Our Good Shepherd will not let the wolf come near us or take us from him. Amen.
