Saved By God's Love
Indeed, it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8–9)
Paul starts this section of Ephesians by saying that we were once dead in our trespasses and sins. We were once able to do nothing in the eyes of God. We were like roadkill on the side of the road, not able to do anything to help ourselves. And then he send his Son, Jesus, who was lifted up on the cross so that we might be alive. God made us alive through Christ Jesus.
This too was not because of anything we did, or had in us. It was because of God’s great love for us. It was because of his grace and mercy that he worked faith in us to work and do what God wants of us. Our works gain us nothing, but God’s grace, his love, gives us everything that we need to be alive. All that we do, then, is for the glory of God, to thank him for his grace and his love for us. Amen.
