The Name of the Lord Is Certainly Praised!

Then he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. May the name of the Lord be blessed.” (Job 1:21)

Job lost everything that he had in a matter of a few hours. He even lost all ten of his children. Job had every reason, humanly speaking, to be angry, depressed, and upset. He had not done anything to cause all this suffering. But Job’s response isn’t a response of anger or hatred.

When Job found out that all of his possessions and his children were gone, he worshipped God. He blessed God because God was the one who had given him everything. Job did not do anything to earn all that he had. It was all given to him by God, and he wasn’t going to be able to take it with him when he departed this world.

God has given us all that we have as well. He blesses us with many things, and sometimes he takes those things from us also. But no matter what, we can praise and worship God because there is one thing that God will not take from us: his love for us. He took that from Jesus for us. He abandoned Jesus because of our sin. We can be assured that God will not abandon us or take his love from us. Therefore, we can worship God even when he takes our possessions or our loved ones from us. Amen.
