The Truth Worth Believing
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:31)
There are many people who seem to think that Christianity is a crutch, something that weak people rely on to bring them comfort. Others chalk it up as just made-up stories. They refuse to believe that God became flesh to redeem his fallen creation.
But John makes it very clear that he and the other Scripture writers did not just make up stories. They didn’t suffer persecution for nothing. They didn’t exaggerate the events of Jesus’ life. They didn’t humiliate themselves and their brothers in the ministry because it was funny. There was a reason that they put their own lives on the line to spread this message.
They did it all because it is true. Jesus really was God. He truly did come in the flesh and die on the cross. And he certainly was raised from the dead. Through him, we have forgiveness of sins and eternal life. It is this great news that brings us comfort in this world. It is the message that is worth risking our lives for. And most importantly, it is a message that is worth believing, because it is true. Amen.
