We Speak A New Language
Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. (Acts 2:18)
When the disciples were gathered together, ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and gave them the ability to speak fluently in languages that they had never studied or learned. But some people who witnessed this thought that the disciples had drank too much. Peter stood up and explained to the crowd that was gathered there what was happening. He began his sermon by quoting from the book of Joel, showing that God had foretold this event in the days of the prophets.
Joel talked about a day when all of God’s people would proclaim the Word of God because the Holy Spirit would be poured out on them. That day began at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and gave them the ability to understand and witness to the words and works of Jesus.
The Spirit has come upon us too, but not in flaming tongues. Instead, he comes to us through the simple proclamation of the gospel, often in the waters of baptism. And he doesn’t give us the ability to speak fluently in other languages, but rather allows us to communicate clearly and plainly the truths of Scripture with those with whom we interact. We may not see visions from God or prophecy in the way that the prophets and apostles did, but we proclaim the Word that God has given to us through his prophets and apostles. And he still makes us his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Amen.
