Absolute Conquerors!
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:37)
When you picture a conqueror, what do you picture? Is it someone from medieval times, riding on a stallion, leaving behind them a wake of slaughtered men? Or is it a king, riding on a white horse, as the town gathers to congratulation him on his victory? Or do you think of a modern conqueror, someone who has conquered the business market? Someone like Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos? How about you? Do you think of yourself as a conqueror?
When we look at ourselves, most often we would be tempted to think of ourselves, not as conquerors, but as failures. When it comes to resisting the devil and temptation, it seems that we fail more than we conquer. Yet Paul tells us that we are more than just conquerors. A conqueror can be defeated in the next battle, but we can never be defeated. But this not because of us. On our own, we are defeated. We can’t conquer. But because of Jesus, who conquered Satan once for all people, we have this complete and total victory. We are more than conquerors through him who loved us. We are beloved children of the King. And nothing can take that from us. Amen.
