Bearing Fruit through Jesus

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. And everything you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:16–17)

It’s hard to pick just one or two verses to focus on in this section of Paul’s letter to the Colossians. In verses 12-17, Paul encourages this Colossian congregation to let their light shine, to act as the children of God that called them to be.

But where does someone go to know how to let their light shine? Well, God has revealed it to us in his Word. And so Paul says “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” In his word, God shows us what heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience look like.

Having the word of Christ dwell in you richly gives you opportunities to teach others and show them how to bear fruits of faith. And we can do that without even realizing it. We even teach by the songs and the hymns that we sing. We teach others in all that we do, as we do it in the name of Jesus, and we give thanks to God for what he does through us. We thank him especially for sending his Son into the world so that we could live in peace and love, as God’s elect. Amen.
