He's God, No Doubt

When all the people saw this, they fell on their knees and said, “The Lord, he is God! The Lord, he is God!” (1 Kings 18:39)

Have you ever had doubts and wished that God would give you a sign that he really did exist, that he really was in control of all things? It’s not that you don’t want to worship God, but you want to know that your worship isn’t in vain like so many other religions.

The people of Israel felt somewhat similar feelings. They were being told to worship Baal, but they also remembered that God had made them his people. If they didn’t worship Baal, they could face death at the hands of King Ahab, but if they didn’t worship the LORD, there could be eternal consequences. And they didn’t know which god to worship.

Elijah sought to fix the problem with his challenge to the prophets of Baal. The prophets of Baal would prepare a sacrifice but not set fire to it, and so would Elijah. The god that answered with fire would be the true God. Despite all the things that the prophets of Baal did to draw Baal’s attention, he did not answer. But when Elijah called out to God, God answered with fire so hot that it burned up the stones of the altar and the water in the trench around the altar. And the people had the answer to their doubts.

When we have doubts, God has an answer for us too. He may not send fire from heaven for us but he gives us his Word by which we know that he is true God. He tells us that we are sinners who need a savior. He tells us that we are spiritually at war against Satan and the forces of evil. And he tells us that he has won the war. He has paid our ransom price with the blood of Jesus poured out on Calvary. He has redeemed us to be his own. And he is our God, the only God. When we have doubts, God gives us his proof that he exists and that he loves us. Amen.
