Our Faithful Prophet, Jesus

[Jesus] was faithful to the one who appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in God’s whole house. In fact, Jesus is worthy of greater glory than Moses, in the same way that the builder of a house has more honor than the house. (Hebrews 3:2–3)

God made Moses his prophet for the people of Israel. Moses was a great prophet. He gave the people God’s law. He led them through the forty years in the desert. He made them a tabernacle to worship God in. He instituted the sacrifices and the festivals for the people. And he most likely wrote the first five books of the Bible. Moses did many great things for the people of God.

And yet Moses was still a sinful man. At first, Moses refused God’s call to lead his people. And when they complained against him and against God, Moses lost his temper with them. For that, God told Moses that he would not enter the promised land.

Jesus came as our great prophet. He was faithful to God and gave the people God’s Word, just as Moses did. But unlike Moses, Jesus was perfect and holy. He did not sin and instead became the sacrifice for our sins. He was greater than Moses because he even paid for Moses’ sins. He took away the sins of the world past, present, and future. That makes him our great high priest and prophet. Amen.
