The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the afflicted. He sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release for those who are bound, (Isaiah 61:1)
The most awful feeling is when someone is feeling down, when they are hurting, and you don’t know what to say or do to help them feel better. Often, we want to take someone’s pain and sorrow away, but we don’t know how to do that.
God saw our hurt and our pain. He saw that sorrow that his people felt. And he wanted to take that pain and sorrow away. But unlike us, God was able to do something about our pain and sorrow. He was able to take our hurt and shame away. And he promised to do so through the prophet Isaiah. God promised to send his Messiah, who would be anointed by the Holy Spirit and would come to help those who were hurting.
God sent his son, Jesus, as his servant. Jesus came into this world and took on the pains of this world. As he went around preaching the good news of salvation, he also took away people’s illnesses and sorrows. He healed people, and even raised the dead back to life. But more than that, Jesus took on the sorrows and the pain that our sin caused us. He took our sins upon himself and he gave us freedom from the captivity of our sins. Now, because of Jesus, our sorrows and our pains do not last forever, nor do they control us. He has given us a joy that makes our sorrows last only a short while. And we now have a way to help others in their sorrows and their pains as well. We can tell them the good news of Jesus. Amen.
