The Spirit of Wisdom

What we received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we might know the blessings freely given to us by God. We also speak about these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual truths with spiritual words. (1 Corinthians 2:12–13)

The Corinthian congregation seemed to have a problem. They were divided on who they wanted to follow because they were judging those who taught them according to the standards of the secular world. Some wanted to follow Paul because they thought he was a better preacher. Others wanted to follow Peter or Apollos because they had great wisdom. But Paul warns them not to cause these divisions among themselves because Paul, Peter, and Apollos were all working together for the same purpose. They all wanted to share the wisdom of Christ crucified and risen.

The wisdom that Paul, Peter, and Apollos all spoke to the Corinthians came to them through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit was the one that convinced these men of the truth. The Spirit was the one who gave them this wisdom and showed them the blessings that are given from following God’s wisdom. What Paul and the others were telling the Corinthians was not from men, but came from God.

When many look at the Bible, they see words written down by men, collected by men, read by men, and explained by men. They see nothing more than flawed wisdom given by men from the past. And they receive nothing from it. But when we look at the Bible, we see a wisdom that is far superior to any human wisdom. It is God’s Word, given to us by his Spirit. It is the words that give life and true freedom. It is THE truth that is only truly understood and explained by the Spirit of God, given to us in faith. It is foolishness to the world, but it is pure wisdom to us, who are in Christ Jesus. The Bible is the wisdom of God for us. Amen.
