Come, Enjoy Wisdom's Feast!
“Come, eat my food, and drink the wine that I have mixed. Abandon your naïve ways and live. Travel the road to understanding.” (Proverbs 9:5–6)
“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.” - Miles Kington
When it comes to God, there is knowledge and there is wisdom. In Kington’s quote, there is the knowledge of the fact that a tomato is a fruit because it produces seeds, but the wisdom not to put it in a fruit salad only comes from experiencing a tomato, and knowing that it is not a sweet fruit, but a bitter one that would through off the sweet taste of a fruit salad.
The same concept goes for God and his Word. There is knowing who God is, knowing what is written in his Word, having knowledge of what God has done. And then there is the wisdom to believe that it is true, to understand what that means for your life, both physical and spiritual.
Solomon described wisdom as a strong woman who built a house and prepared a banquet. She invited all who were naive and lacked sense to come to this banquet. Those who did found life and understanding. They found the understanding of God’s salvation. Wisdom invites her guests, not only to know about the banquet that she’s offered but to experience it. And God does the same for us in his Word. He not only wants us to know of him and his salvation, but he wants us to trust him and to trust his salvation. He wants us to experience his love for us, the forgiveness that he has given to us through his son, Jesus.
You could say that knowledge is knowing that God exists, wisdom is trusting that he loves you and has taken away your sin. Continue to study God’s Word and truly understand God’s gracious love for you. Amen.
