Thursday September 17, 2020 - Boasting in Christ

But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)

Paul writes this statement in opposition to those who want to make the Galatian Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions and customs, namely circumcision and food-related observances. They just want to boast in what they were able to accomplish. Paul doesn’t want that to happen, so he writes today’s verse.

We can easily fall into a similar trap of boasting in the flesh. By staring at someone for the way they are dressed as if to tell them that they are underdressed for church, we boast in our way of dressing. When we continuously watch the unruly child, as if to say that the child is not well enough behaved for church, we boast in our maturity level at church.

When this happens, we need to remember where our boasting should be. It is in Jesus Christ, the Lord who was crucified for all the boasting that we do in the flesh. He was crucified for every sin that we commit. He was crucified by the world, for the world. And through his resurrection, we are connected to him in his death.

The only one that we can rightly boast in is the one who has done it for us, the Lord Jesus Christ. So we give up boasting in the world and the flesh. We are crucified to the world. We are no longer of the world and so we boast only in Christ. Amen.
