Wednesday October 14, 2020 - Obedient to God
but he emptied himself by taking the nature of a servant. When he was born in human likeness, and his appearance was like that of any other man, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:7–8)
As a child, no matter how obedient I tried to be there was usually something that I’d end up doing wrong. And no matter how much I was disciplined, there was always something that I thought I knew better about , or didn’t want to do, or forgot about.
Even now, I can read what God tells me to do in his Word and walk away to do exactly the opposite. No matter how hard I try to obey God’s every command, there is a part of me that thinks it knows better, or doesn’t want to do what God says, or forgets what God asks of me. That’s my sinful nature. That’s the struggle of being a sinner and a saint at the same time. We all face this issue everyday.
But there is one who obeyed perfectly. He was obedient to God all the time. That one is Jesus. He was born into this world, having given up the full use of his divinity, to obey in our place. He was obedient even to the point of dying on the cross to pay for our sins. All that he did so that we might have life with him in eternity.
Out of thanks to God for this grace, we repent of our sins and strive to be obedient to God in everything we do. Amen.
