Your King Comes in a Manger
After they went into the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11)
Yesterday was Epiphany, the day that the church has traditionally set aside to celebrate the wise men following the star to worship the Christ child. This is the first that we are told that the savior was revealed to the Gentiles. These men came a long distance to worship this child who had been born as the savior. As they worshipped the newborn King, they presented him with gifts fit for a king.
This newborn King came as not just the king of the Jews, but our gracious and loving king. He came as the king who was willing to give up his life to save his people. And yet he was also our victorious king. He did not negotiate with our enemy. He defeated death and the devil through his death and resurrection. This is our king, our brother, Jesus. As we worship him this Epiphany season, let us bring him our best, our all, gifts fit for a king. Amen.
Our song for today is “The King Shall Come” by Trevor Thomson
