Your Obedient Brother
He went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was always obedient to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people. (Luke 2:51–52)
I think any parent would say that they wished their child was like Jesus. He was always obedient to his earthly parents. And he also obeyed his heavenly Father. He was the perfect child. He did everything that his parents asked him to do. Jesus honored his father and mother perfectly.
And in this, we see both Jesus’ human and divine natures. As true God, he could be completely obedient to his parents. And as true man, he could grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and people. He could be our brother and our savior all in the same person. By his perfect obedience, he took on our disobedience. He replaced our defiance with his obedience in God’s sight. Our parents may have wished at times that they had children who listened better or who did as they asked. While we may not have been perfectly obedient to our parents, our brother has given us his perfection before our heavenly Father. Amen.
