A Call For the Kingdom
Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17)
As Jesus called Simon and Andrew to follow him, Jesus called them to be fishers of men. He used what they were familiar with to explain to them how they would grow the kingdom of God. They would be fishing for souls that needed to be saved. They would spread the gospel like a net, hoping to save some people. It would be hard and tiring work, sometimes with no results. But it would be necessary.
Jesus calls us to follow him too. And he asks us to spread his gospel. For us too, it can be explained in terms of what we know. Jesus could say to us, “I will make you a teacher of the kingdom” or “I will make you a nurse for wounded souls” or “You will insure and invest souls for the kingdom” or “I will make you a builder of my kingdom” or “I will make you the dietitian for hungry souls” or whatever it is that you do. Jesus wants to use you to spread his kingdom. He wants you to share the message that you received from him, the message of the gospel. Following Jesus means spreading the kingdom to others as well. Amen.
