No Fear in Death

Therefore, since the children share flesh and blood, he also shared the same flesh and blood, so that through death he could destroy the one who had the power of death (that is, the Devil) and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14–15)

For many people, death is a scary thing. What happens when I die? What if I didn’t do life right, or I didn’t enjoy my life to the full extent? And every religion seeks to answer those questions and in some way bring peace to some people. Many religions promote this peace by encouraging followers to transcend the physical world, or by working hard to please the god(s). Others comfort themselves by saying that there is nothing after this life. Once they die, that’s it.

But our God gives us true peace and comfort in the face of death. He didn’t leave it up to us to do something about death. Instead, he sent his Son, to be born into this world and become like us. He took on our flesh and blood and died in our place. By his death and resurrection, he destroyed the power that death had over us. Now death is just a sleep. It is the entrance to a perfect life. One lived with our God in perfect peace. Death is no longer a scary thing for us. It is a glorious thing. We have been freed from its power and control. That’s what our brother, Jesus, did for us. Amen.
