Like Crying At a Wedding

Jesus said to them, “The friends of the bridegroom cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. (Mark 2:19)

Have you ever been to a wedding where the atmosphere was somber feeling, like everyone was sad that this wedding was happening and no one wanted to be there? My guess is that you have not. Typically a wedding is a happy occassion. It is filled with dancing and cake. A wedding is cause for celebration.

When some people came to Jesus and asked him why his disciples didn’t fast, Jesus compared the time that he was on earth to a wedding celebration. Why would the disicples fast, which was a sign of mourning, when they had the savior with them. Having the savior there, teaching them was a reason to celebrate. It changed their attitude toward life.

Even though we don’t have Jesus walking among us in bodily form, we still have a reason to celebrate as well. We rejoice and are glad because we still have Jesus. He is with us every moment of our lives. He directs everything for our good, and he has washed us clean of our sins. We are holy in his sight. Therefore, we have nothing to mourn about. Instead, we rejoice and celebrate our risen and ascended savior. Amen.
