Powerful Witnesses

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Yesterday, we celebrated Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he gave his disciples this commission to be his witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea, and to the ends of the earth. When he sent the Holy Spirit, he would give them the gifts necessary to start the church and build it up. they would establish the foundation upon which the church is still being built. They would be given the inspiration to write the Word of God and leave us the gospels that tell us about Jesus.

Jesus gives us the same commission. He wants us to be his witnesses to Mountain Home, Arkansas, or wherever we live, and to the ends of the earth. He wants us to share his life-giving Word with those who are around us and those whom we meet. He calls us to show others his love for us and for them. And he still sends his Holy Spirit to be with us as we do so. We aren’t alone in our witness. We have been given God the Holy Spirit to help us. For only he creates faith in us and in others. He is the one who makes us witnesses to Christ’s life, death, resurrection, and ascension. He gives us the power to be his witnesses in the world. Amen.
