The Promised King is Coming!

When your days are complete and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your seed, who will come from your own body. I will establish his kingdom. (2 Samuel 7:12)

As David looked around at his beautiful palace, he saw that God’s dwelling place on earth, his meeting place, was still the tent of the tabernacle that God had commanded Moses to build. It was still a temporary dwelling made of curtains. David wanted to build God a worship place fit for a king. David had good intentions to build a beautiful worship place for the Ark of God.

God had other plans. He sent Nathan to tell David that he would not be the one to build a house for God. Instead, God gave David an even better promise. God promised David that he would raise up a seed from his own line who would have an everlasting kingdom. David would not be the one to build the temple, but his son Solomon would. And later on, a descendant of David named Mary would give birth to the Promised Seed, the one whose kingdom God has established for eternity.

That promised seed was Jesus, the ruler of the earth. He was born into this world to save his people from their sins. He was the one who was disciplined by rods and blows of men in our place. And he was the one who God raised from the dead and placed at his right hand to rule over all things for eternity. He is our heavenly king. He builds the kingdom of God in our hearts, the hearts of his people, through faith. Amen.
